Special Exhibit at Saint Gaudens: The National Park Service & Friends Respond to Anti-Semitic Acts
Saturday, July 23, 2022
Quilt on Display through October 31st.
In 2021, rangers arrived at the St. Gaudens National Historic Site and discovered a sculpture defaced with anti-Semitic symbols and words. Recently, on August 21st, several hundred people gathered to renounce hate and support healing through the arts. Jazz-infused Klezmer music echoed while dozens of people created art panels illustrating the strength and joy of community.
Park staff joined 72 individual perspectives into a single "quilt" by connecting each square of paper using torn fabric, honoring the Jewish tradition of Kiriah, the act of tearing one's clothing as an expression of grief and loss. Individual panels became a collective expression. Please consider viewing this powerful quilt, which will be on display through October 31. Viewing it in groups may enhance the experience. It's located in the Carriage House near the Visitors Information Building.
