Strengthening Families 10-14 Program, “Circle Talks” and Substance Abuse/Prevention Coalition Development
SFP 10-14 Community Educators goal is to expand the capacity for reaching families by training those who work with youth and parents to work in teams of three to deliver the 7-session, evidenced-based program SFP 10-14. As of July 2006, 25 people have recruited and been trained in the program.
Circle Talks are discussion groups for parents and other interested adults held in neighborhood homes, schools, and churches for the purpose of increasing awareness, connections and possibly, community action in relation to prevention of risky behaviors like substance abuse. Twenty-eight (28) parents attended one of the three Circle Talks given in the county last year (2005). Local people who have been trained as facilitators conduct Circle Talks. (Click here on link to a PDF of the Circle Talks brochure).
Sullivan County Community Coalition - the project plan has included development of a community coalition to work together to combat substance abuse. Working with other community agencies, the newly formed Sullivan County Community Coalition (SCCC) has identified a facilitator and conducts regular monthly meetings. SCCC is building a diverse membership and an infrastructure that will be able to accomplish goals and leverage other funding for our county. The Coalition sponsored two town hall meetings on Underage Drinking. Over 60 people attended in Newport and 40 in Claremont. Responding to the need for more information to help their teen make decisions about risky behaviors, UNH Cooperative Extension offered two follow-up workshops for interested parents and community members.
Grantor (s): NH State Governor’s Commission on Alcohol and Substance Abuse Prevention, Intervention and Treatment. Grant funds provide funding for salary and some program expenses for the above programs.
