The 2012 SCCD Cooperators of the Year: the Gallagher family (Heather, Gwyn, Sally Wellborn and Bill), owners and operators of Many Summers Farm in Cornish
Many Summers Farm spans two generations. Bill Gallagher and Sally Wellborn bought their first cow when they began homesteading in Cornish in the late 1960s. In 1999, in partnership with their son and daughter-in-law Gwyn and Heather, they bought a small herd of American Milking Devon cattle. Then in 2004, the Gallagher family committed to a six year project that retrofitted a combination home, milking parlor, and cheese kitchen with a unique drainage system, which has virtually eliminated water pollution from manure runoff. Today, Many Summers makes and sells aged raw milk cheeses, raw milk yogurt, and grass fed beef. They also help to breed pure Devon cows and bulls, preserving the rare breed for future generations. Many Summers Farm relies on rotational grazing to feed their herd, with no supplemental grains, synthetic chemicals or antibiotics. |
