Janice Heighes, District Manager WHO WE ARE: Sullivan County Conservation District (SCCD) is a sub-division of state government established in 1946 under New Hampshire RSA, Chapter 432. We are a branch of county government and funded for one full-time position through the County budget. We are one of more than 3,000 Conservation Districts throughout the United States that have worked with landusers and municipalities for over 56 years, on a voluntary basis, to maintain and protect soil and water resources. District Manager, Jan Heighes, has been with Sullivan County Conservation District for more than twenty years and administers SCCD programs and projects under the direction of an all-volunteer Board of Supervisors comprised of Sullivan County landowners dedicated to directing conservation programs that reflect local needs. Monthly meetings are held on the fourth Thursday of each month at 7:00 PM in the Conference Room and are open to the public. Technical assistance is provided by our partner, the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS). Requests for technical assistance must be made through SCCD and may come from landowners, municipalities, schools, or civic organizations. SERVICES WE PROVIDE: ü Soil Maps and soil capability information for land management decisions. ü Assistance to private landusers, municipalities, and schools with soil erosion and water quality concerns by providing information and technical assistance for the installation of sound conservation practices. ü Educational workshops that meet local needs of landowners, municipalities and schools. ü Soil Potential Indexes for Farmland in Current Use. ü Annual Conservation Tree and Shrub Sale for private landowners – bare rootstock at low cost. ü Spring Trout Stocking Sale for private pond owners in the County. ü Aerial photographs and topographic maps for reference. Aerial photos are available from 1946 to 1998. Flight years 1972 and 1993 are available at this office. The remaining flight years are resources out of the NRCS field office in Walpole, NH. ü Provide NH-Department of Environmental Services Wetland Permitting Application information support and/or preparation of permit applications for landusers WHAT WE ARE NOT: SCCD IS NOT A REGULATORY AGENCY. Our goal is to provide wise land management conservation information, technical support and assistance to landusers in Sullivan County which allow them to make voluntary land management decisions for the protection and conservation of their soil and water resources. OUR MISSION STATEMENT: TO MAKE AVAILABLE TECHNICAL, FINANCIAL AND EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES, WHATEVER THEIR SOURCE, AND FOCUS OR COORDINATE THEM SO THAT THEY MEET THE NEEDS OF THE LOCAL LANDUSER. |
